Key accomplishments:

  • Directed an academic department through a year of hybrid-flexible (Hy-Flex) instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • As inaugural chair of the stand-alone department of architecture at NDSU, coordinated with chairs of departments of landscape architecture and visual arts to formally launch the new School of Design and work on multiple strategic initiatives for the new School and opportunities for collaboration between the three disciplines.
  • Successfully led the UDC Master of Architecture program through the process of Initial Accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), including preparation of Architecture Program Reports, planning, and coordination of Continuation of Candidacy, Initial Accreditation, and Continuation of Accreditation visits.
  • Provided leadership and strategic direction for a multi-discipline/multi-program department consisting of five full-time tenure track faculty, seven adjunct faculty, eight land-grant faculty, and one hundred thirty students enrolled in seven academic programs (program director for four).
  • Set policy and priorities as College representative for the IT Governance Committee at UDC.
  • Provided strategic direction and resource allocation oversight as a member of the UDC Budget Committee.
  • Developed curriculum for the following degree programs: M. Arch. (advanced standing and non-advanced standing); B.Sc. Arch.; B.A. in Urban Sustainability, and Ph.D. in Urban Leadership & Entrepreneurship.
  • Facilitated approval process and implementation of new B.A. in Urban Sustainability and Ph.D. program in Urban Leadership & Entrepreneurship degree programs.
  • Worked closely with the Director for the land-grant Architectural Research Institute to help place students in internships with the clinical arm of the academic program where they are engaged in community architectural projects through MOU’s with the District of Columbia Department of Housing and Community Development.
  • Volunteered for the NAAB for 11 years, including Chair of 5 and member of 4 Accreditation Teams; also served as a member of additional workgroups/committees.
  • Held leadership positions in both AIA and NCARB at local, regional and/or national levels.
  • Raised funds and directed approx. $30,000 in scholarship funds annually to college students in A/E/C programs as Treasurer of CBF Charities Board of Directors.
  • Secured over $120,000 in research grants and equipment for design projects.  

Susan Schaefer Kliman, PhD, FAIA

Susan Schaefer Kliman is a transformational leader with over 30 years of experience in professional practice, academia, and service. Dr. Kliman is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Architecture at North Dakota State University.  She has also served as Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at the University of the District of Columbia, and Co-Director of the Center for Architectural Innovation and Building Science at UDC. Prior to that, she was in private practice as the managing principal for her own firm.  She has dedicated her career to the development of the next generation of architects and has a long-standing commitment to equity and diversity in the profession.


Dr. Kliman’s research interests include high-performance architecture/green infrastructure; urban heat island mitigation; building science; healthy and resilient communities; and food security.
